Splitter or Phone line?

I've been having problems with my Internet and phone line for the last couple of months and it's finally started to annoy me enough to try and fix it.

We have one phone line in the flat which has an extension cable going into a splitter to feed the modem and the phone line. More often than not the phone line is just dead. If you call our number it's just ringing out but we hear nothing. Once in a while it works fine (without changing anything). At first I thought it was the splitter but a bunch of new splitters later and still no joy. If we plug the phone direct into the phone line socket all is well. Can anyone point me in the right direction? It seems to me that it must be related to the line being split but I can't work out why it would be on and off. Thanks.

When you talk about a splitter, do you mean an ADSL filter?

Try eliminating your extension by using the test socket in the link above.

I'll give this a shot when I get home. The internet connection is fine all the time - never drops out. Phone line comes and goes but works as expected when connected without going through the filter. Very odd.

try putting the phone on the master socket direct (via a filter) and the puter on the extension cable. and make sure your first box into the property is a master socket.
also try another phone, ive seen phones that are not compatable with an extension system.
    Get some gorm.
