Break down cover for a camper? Ouch...

Getting stung here trying to get 'simple' (so I thought) break down cover for my micro-DIY van camper. Not talking one of these big ugly leviathan Sprinters. Pretty much every quote I have has a caveat saying no campers. Really sucks. We're talking £25 per year policies for my vehicle in usual 'van' guise to having to cough up £100 just because it's got a bed in the back....I mean what the chuck. You wouldn't even know my van is a camper!

Any suggestions/thoughts/deals etc on this?

  • The VERY cheap £25 policies are inevitably going to be utterly minimal - they simply can't be profitable if you even think about phoning them to call them out.

Cheapest way, if you only need cover for one vehicle, is usually an insurer add-on.

It makes sense. A factory van is going to have at least been through some quality control, whereas a DIY camper just needs to pass an MOT.

Your's might just be a van with a bed in the back, but lots of them must be a nightmare of electrical gremlins and battery drains.

As has been stated the £25 policy will have a lot of caveats as that will not cover the cost of the administration.

Camper vans probably cannot be recovered on a standard recovery truck, more likely to have battery drains, more likely to be no driven regularly. So many reasons, why not look at a family any vehicle policy.

Any decent policy is surely £100 a year IMHO.

Camper breakdown cover gives you so much more than standard breakdown cover though. I have been with Green Flag
and the RAC with their Mayday and Arrival options.

Breakdown on the way to a booked holiday/campsite and they will take you there and get accomodation sorted and even take
you home if it cannot be fixed in time.  Towing they will drop a caravan off at a storage site and take you home or take it to
a campsite and then take the vehicle to be repaired or home. So many options it's worth the money for many.

I had an RAC guy spend hours replacing a clutch slave cylinder that stuck as I was reversing upto the caravan, they would not
normally spend that long repairing a vehicle with standard breakdown.
