Electric meter issue

I have just noticed that my analogue leccy meter ( Actaris ACE1000 SM0, dated Jul '08 ) has the 800 Imp/kWh red light showing constantly...and have confirmed that the meter reading is no longer incrementing !   No difference after a good ole fashioned whack either...oh, and...I do have power as normal :)        Seems to have stopped working in the last fortnight.

So...what is the likelihood that the meter will be replaced with an identical non-smart meter ?  I'm thinking no f^&*£%ing chance....just wondered if anyone else has been in a similar situation recently.

In the meantime, it had occurred to me that I could tempt my neighbours to charge their electric cars for a discounted rate of my choosing :)

( FWIW I'm with Octopus and have no power hungry devices - no electric/power shower, no tumble drier or electric/hybrid car for instance, so no requirement for any 'special' tariffs ).

Nobody is refurbishing the old units, most unlikely to get a non smart one

On the plus side octopus use their own engineers to fit them not contractors

When I was meter reading red light on the meter meant no power was being used or if there was power then meter had been tampered to get free electric.
There may be other reasons for a constant red light on with power going through the meter but I don t know of the reasons
You will definitely be getting a smart meter as suppliers do not keep stocks of old meters like Actaris.

Get a smart meter, it will open world of opportunities like replacing phone from 2008 to a recent one! But if you want to you can still use it only for calling 👍

In the light of what SAC says above I would report it ASAP if you haven’t already done so.

Generally when meters are replaced it will be with a brand new up to date model - so a SMETS2 in this case.

There is no down side to getting a SM, even if you can’t benefit from smart tariffs you will get the odd hour of free electricity.

We don’t have any particularly power hungry devices either by the way - but we’re still managing to make a good saving on Octopus Agile - and saving on gas too by using electricity to heat the house on occasions when the electricity unit prices make it attractive to do so! Woke up on Monday morning to a warm house and a negative cost showing for our energy use for the day that far!

Not always. Mine was fitted by a contractor.

When my meter went like that just under two years ago EoN replaced it with a non-smart digital meter, some two months after reporting it.

The meter certainly had not been "tampered with" and from my reading around at the time was a common enough fault for that make and model of mechanical meter.

Around 9 months later I was offered £50 to have a smart meter installed so took their bribe.
