How much are we talking about?
Is the next question "and what store" lol
No, because we know it was in a charity shop. If it's £5, not really worth worrying about, but if it's £500.........
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I once went to a cash machine attached to a supermarket - saw some money sticking out of it and pulled it out. Turned out to be £200. Phoned the number on the cash machine and was told - take it into the bank. I told them it was a supermarket and they said take it in there.

I handed the £200 to customer service and they took my details. My wife was convinced I'd never hear any more.

Two weeks later they wrote to me saying it hadn't been claimed and they had handed it to the police.

Some time later (2 months?) the police wrote saying - the lost property you handed in has not been claimed you can come and collect it.

I went to the police station, said I didn't find it - I took it from a cash machine, surely you could find out who was at the machine before me?

The policeman was somewhat disinterested, he said it hasn't been claimed and it is now yours.

I was up £200, and felt I had done about as much as could have been expected from me, but was convinced the owner could have been tracked.

Anyway to go back to the point. I had to go through 2 processes. A short one by the shop and a longer one from the police.

I'd be very wary of a shop either keeping the money or distributing it themselves. The arbiter for lost property has to be the police. They should be consulted for advice at least.
If it was poking out of a slot, the machine should have taken it back eventually. It then would have created a cash error (over) at reconciliation. If a customer then said they’d forgotten to take the money, you could see if you had a cash over in that machine and rectify it. As you took it, no error created and likely the customer was told by their bank tough (regrettably). Not wanting to make you feel bad though!

When I managed ATMs it was impossible to tell who the customer was as cash machines handle tens of thousands in withdrawals. I can’t imagine it’s any different now.

Im not going to say how much it is as we would have lots of people trying to claim it if it got out. But I will say that it is 2 figures, not 3. It will get reported to the police but hopefully someone will come forward.

I can't imagine people reading this thread will be visiting unknown charity shops in an unknown location trying to claim the money.

Many years ago I found cash left in a NatWest cash machine in Brighton, along with the withdrawal slip. Couldn't take it into the bank as it was closed (Saturday), so I took it away with me and then handed it in to my local branch of NatWest. I hope it found its way back to the owner.

Its quite a small world! I posted once before on here  about an issue at work and one of the customers saw it and then checked through my username posts and the next time she came in she said 'I saw the thread on MSE, I was in here when that happened' then she also passed comment on one of my other threads.
There is also a Facebook page about charity shopping and a couple of weeks ago I saw a photo on there taken in our shop. I was talking about it at work when a lady came in and said she had seen the same photo.
Big brother really is watching. lol.
