When you said you were expected to pay a quarter, it seemed quite reasonable to me.
You don't get the automatic right to beneficial interest unless you are married or in a civil partnership.

In some ways, this is no different to you being a lodger. You live in the property with the owners, pay them rent and a portion of the bills. You could be asked to leave at any point. I understand it feels different because of the personal relationship.
Back to your original question. Everyone paying the same amount feels fair to me.2 -
