Many thanks jefaz07, for this info, and putting me straight on the type of gas meter I have! I understand everything now! I think I'll put off having any new pipes for now. I'll get our usual gas boiler service guys to check everything each year, going forwards.
Many thanks to everyone, for all your really interesting and useful replies.1 -
When I came back to my house after renting it out I found the gas hob disconnected and condemned so took the opportunity to put in an induction hob, which works well and is very efficient. When you read articles like this from today's paper I realise it was the correct decision:

A small gas leak can turn into a larger one so I would worry .
As a long term meter reader I used to find many small gas leaks in outside meter boxs .I always made a report to Cadent who always came out to do a pressure check and check the gas unions and anaconda around the meter .I was told that no gas leak at all is acceptable.
On our handheld data collectors we would get notice of the age of the occupier with a warning about sense of smell as the older you get the less you can smell escaping gas .
Relying on sense of smell of gas for people of more advanced age is not good advice .Any leaks behind gas fires for instance would be vented straight up the chimney .0
