Here's a vent some buildings here have. Is this the 'air admittance valve or durgo valve'?

This is the bathroom, boxed in soil stack.

If it's a kind of cabbagey smell it could be the shower trap. I had this problem in one bathroom and it turned out that the trap cover was the wrong one for the trap and didn't form a proper seal. Even with water in the trap there was still a bit of a whiff. I've had the same in another shower the other day, and noticed that the cover wasn't on properly.

Thanks to all sorts of reasons I haven't plugged it up properly yet. I may unplug that hole for ventilation and see if it helps but need to find some fine mesh first to cover it.

When I needed to plug holes I used steel pan scouring balls. They worked well and were cheaper than finding and fitting mesh covers.

I'm currently using these on the grounds that they won't rust and find them easy to cut up with scissors too.

    Just an update.

Going by the infomation on here I've managed to get some considerable improvement.
I unplugged the hole in the wall during the day when I hoped no self respecting field mouse would be tempted - and wondering if the vent was poor (I know it is, some neighbours have had the roof thing put on) I made a point of using that loo a few times a day and so flushing out the pipes I hope.
Having 2 loos for 1 peep it takes planning and decision making. And yes, flushing the toilet say, 2 times a day has made it fresher.
It at least buys me time to get my other probs sorted while on the look out for someone who can sort out the venting.

    So thanks folks :)
