  • I have been pestered by Outfox the Market and SMS (meter firm) twice a day to have my elec meter replaced with a smart meter ASAP as it is at the end of its life, but when I look to book there are never any appointments available

If you are moving out soon I'd just keep ignoring their letters and leave it to the new tenant to deal with.

Who'd have thought it, the new electricity smart meter didn't work! Only took 6 months and a trip to the ombudsman to sort it out. Still, they did give me some compensation.

We have had similar letters, then just by chance last week I heard someone outside and it was a meter reader.  I asked him if our meter had 'expired' and he told me far from it and there is no reason for it to be changed.
We've received the letters too but our meter is at least 30+ years old so I definitely believe it has expired.
Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Meters don't 'expire'. What does expire is the meter's certification, the manufacturer's warranty that it will faithfully measure what it's supposed to measure to the required precision for at least as long as the certification lasts. If it fails to do so, the supplier will have a case against the manufacturer. Once a meter's certification has expired, the supplier cannot rely on it for billing purposes and is legally required to exchange it. Meter certification periods vary from 10 to 45 years, so the fact that a meter is 30 years old is no indication that its certification has expired. You might be able to find your electricity meter in this official document: Schedule 4: UK nationally approved electricity meters.
