GPS speed limit detectors
I'm after something that acts like the thing on map apps that tells you what the speed limit is for the area you're in but something that can just sit on the dashboard somewhere rather than an app. I'm not after something that tells me what speed cameras are coming up or something that tells me how fast I'm actually going. There are some things online that are pretty cheap but descriptions about what they actually do are pretty sketchy. Does anyone know if you can pick such a thing up at a reasonable price and, if so, if they're any good?

I have a Cheetah GPS unit which is excellent- picked it up 2nd hand for £90 but not sure they’re still available.
Prior to that I had one from Aldi which was very cheap (about £25 I think) and it was excellent- lasted for about 10 years.
There are loads on ‘the auction site’ but I have no idea if they’re actually any use & many claim to have all sorts of laser detection and everything else but you don’t need it. GPS only is fine (& free updates if you can). I have used them for years and they have been very reliable.1 -
In my experience, speed limits are often wrong on the likes of google maps etc.
I’ve been told many times on many trips that the speed limit is something different to what the road is posted as.
Signs at the side of the road are free and reliable 😉5 -
GPS for speed limits is only as good as the mapping it is connected too.
It is reliant on Councils etc updating the system (there are 3) & the company providing the mapping updating the system. Which would need to be real time. Very few if any are.
Even as above google can be off.
Also you are not going to cover variable or average limits, as they are flexible.
Even the systems in cars that pick up speed signs get it wrong when a sign is misaligned.
The best & cheapest is your eyes.Life in the slow lane2 -
signs and your eyes should be perfect for the jobHebrews12 said:I'm after something that acts like the thing on map apps that tells you what the speed limit is for the area you're in but something that can just sit on the dashboard somewhere rather than an app. I'm not after something that tells me what speed cameras are coming up or something that tells me how fast I'm actually going. You are asking for something that is not 100% reliable when your eyes areHebrews12 said:

It’s like asking your passenger if it’s clear to the left when pulling out of a junction

Sometimes you do not have a clear view due to the passenger sitting next to you if entry road is at 45 degree angleMikeJXE said:

A possible alternative is a speed limiter + eyes reading only main speed limit signs. My EV has a button on the steering wheel to set the maximum speed and switch between 20,30,40. Its brilliant for travelling across country through villages but with open stretches as well. In town I only ever set it at 20 due to bad signage + traffic congestion anyway.I don't know if this function can be installed in petrol or diesel vehicles.0

That doesn't make the driver any less responsible.35har1old said:

Speed limiters have been around for donkeys. Being petrol/diesel has no bearing on whether it can be installed or not. Just if the manufacturer has it available for that model, either at point of purchase or as a retrofit.Jellynailer said:A possible alternative is a speed limiter + eyes reading only main speed limit signs. My EV has a button on the steering wheel to set the maximum speed and switch between 20,30,40.
