And the damage done to your car I would suggest is minimal from a deer.
I'm assuming that's a typo?  Hitting a deer at anything more than a few MPH can make a hell of a mess of a car.

I think Brie was pointing out that 2 to 3k of damage suggests the OP was relatively lucky given other cars get written off.
Ah right, yes.  Sorry, I misunderstood, now I've re-read it that makes sense.

Yes - that the OP was in a position to drive the car on at all underlines that they really were pretty fortunate! I've seen a lot of vehicles locally to us in no state to be driven anywhere other than a scrapper  following a deer collision.  I had one some years ago - on the M25 of all places. Thankfully the deer ran out and collided with the front wing - and my Clio "plastic" wing promptly bent inwards then sort of propelled the deer off onto the hard shoulder. The car had some creased paintwork, and a bit of a scuff, and I think the deer must have been in a similar state as after an accusing look at me she proceeded to head back from where she'd come! Again though - a very lucky escape.

I'd claim OP - particularly if you pay for protected no claims. Even if not though - that's a lot of money to be out of pocket otherwise.

Funny thing with deer when they are in a field they belong to the landowner and it's illegal to kill one but when they jump into the road they are a wild animal and the landowner isn't responsible
I think you're getting confused with the difference between farmed deer (very few, and usually well secured - which isn't easy...) and genuinely wild ones (more common than you think).

It's considered bad form to drive into any farm animal while it's in a field, by the way.

That reminds me of this old joke.

A man is driving along a road. A woman is driving along the same road from the opposite direction. As they pass each other, the woman leans out the window and yells PIG!! The man immediately leans out his window and yells B ITCH!!
They each continue on their way, and as the man rounds the next corner he crashes into a huge pig in the middle of the road.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

Not getting confused, if I was to poach a wild deer in a farmers field they would claim it belongs to them but if it runs into the road and damages my car they don't own it
  • It’s all been said. My only contribution at this point is “Oh dear”.
