Halifax Clarity in Peru

Options
Anyone shed some light on why my Halifax Clarity card won't work in Peru? I've tried it with 2 different merchants on 2 different days with the same results. 'Tapping' returns a red cross on the merchant terminal and inserting is exactly the same in both cases. I've done a chat with Halifax who assure me everything is OK and to try again. I'll be in Peru until the end of October and really need the confidence it will work if I try to use it again.

Did you successfully use a different MasterCard (or Visa) with those two merchants?
Sometimes the cause of such a failure is some obscure technical glitch and can never be identified. Probably all you can do is keep trying as advised, or use an alternative.

When I went to Peru, I found a lot of places don't accept Mastercard (only Visa), especially in the Colca Canyon. Have you tried an alternative Visa card?

Thanks, going to try VISA if happens again but wanted to avoid currency charges

Too late now I appreciate, but perhaps consider a Barclaycard Rewards credit card or Kroo debit card for your next trip? Both are Visa cards and don't charge fees for overseas use.
