After 30 years of struggling with my hearing, it finally fell off a cliff. Almost overnight I became profoundly deaf and could not continue in my job due to the safety aspect. So I chose to go. Because of the nature of my retirement, I could claim my company pensions and have never looked back.
A sibling found the same, although I think the hearing faded rather than fell away. After a while they bought a portable induction loop to enable them to continue to function in meetings, and their comment was "I used to fall asleep in meetings because I couldn't hear. Now I fall asleep in meetings because they are so boring." NB no safety implications in their role.

I always said I'd be out the door very quickly if my hearing left me struggling to function. As it was, redundancy struck the month before I'd intended to retire, and the hearing is still holding up!
