Error on credit report

Good evening. After a mortgage application was declined I have discovered that there is a default listed from Octopus Energy on my credit report. There was no default and I don’t owe them any money but 10 days after first contacting them I am no further forward in getting this resolved. Does anyone have any experience of getting an error corrected via the credit agencies? A notice of correction I think it’s called. Or anything else I can do? I’m a bit desperate.

When you say you're no further ahead does that mean they haven't responded at all, are thinking it over or something else?  If they agree that you are right and they are wrong that will take time to make it to the credit report as would any notice of correction you put on it.  I'm thinking timescales of 1 - 3 months.

Have you considered working with a mortgage broker to help you secure the mortgage you need?  They might know a good way to navigate past this.

  • Thank you. They ignore emails and when I call I’m told they will contact me in 2-3 days, then it’s another 2-3 days etc. I saw a mortgage advisor and this is how the issue was discovered as 2 applications were declined so he has said it’s best to wait and get it resolved before applying again.

If the default is incorrect then you complain to Octopus and ask them to remove it

The CRAs only record the information they are given so you have to complain to the source.

Put in a formal complaint, don't waste time with waiting for call backs. A complaint will allow you to go to the Ombudsman after a fixed period as well
