There are usually some small studs sticking out of the door that engage with catch plates on the frame. These studs are often on eccentric screws, so if you turn them, they will (should) pull the door in a bit tighter.
Studs like these? https://uuwd.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/20240508_090231-scaled.jpg (sorry I am away right now)
Yup. Those are indeed the type I was thinking of.

Thanks FreeBear! i tried but no matter how many turns I make, it didn't make any difference sadly.
If the latching buttons are adjustable, it would only have needed a quarter turn at most.

I had a problem with my front door which I thought had dropped on it's hinges. No discernable gap, but the bottom of the door was catching on the sill and the locks were out of alignment. I got a double-glazing repairman out and he said the top was level so it wasn't the hinges. He "repacked" the door (no idea what that entailed apart from lots of banging!) and it solved the problem. I assume the door was out-of-square rather than the hinges being at fault.

"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.

Unfortunately, turning this made no difference. :(

I have no problem with the locks or closing/opening - it all seems to be smooth. When I close the door (not using the lock), the gap is in the bottom right corner. Latching and locking made no difference.

On a whim I took the spirit level out and both the frame and door are straight so maybe the door isn't warped.

Not sure what my next steps are other than sticking another layer of seal just for the bottom to prevent cold draught.

Have a look to see if you have a local window/door doctor - It might be possible to adjust the catch plates to close up the gap.

  • Thank you all for your help and advice. Here's a quick update if this helps.

I struggled to find a door doctor and one wanted to charge £350+VAT. So I made do with an extra set of seals just for the bottom corner (on top of an existing one) and it's made a world of difference!

We will make an assessment next few years whether to have a full back extension so spending a lot of money for this door doesn't seem MSE to me. :)
