pop-up blocker-cn any1 find be a freebie??

Options
:-[
Hi

I have google pop-up blocker, firewall, spysweeper and window washer but am still get constant pop-ups for gaming sites, mobile ringtones and most disturbingly sex sites.
I live with my 2 daughters under 5 so I know no-one is using the computer to access these type of sites and thus setting up a link.

This is getting more and more upsetting as my 4 year old was on CBeebies when a window for 'F**k S**ts' came up.

I recently moved onto Broadband and someone told me that these types of sites are throwing these windows out at an alarming rate indiscriminatly knowing that the speed of broadband allows them to get through??? This seems ridiculous to me.

Please can someone advise me what I need and can I please get it free? But I suppose I would be happy to pay for it if it kept my daughters safe.

Thanks and sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Worried mum

Install the latest version of Firefox

End of story. Nothing else required. It can also block ads within the pages, if you install the Adblock extension

  • I use this firewall called 'ZONE ALARM' its the best Ive ever used, you can change the level of security on your comp blocking all pop ups, i think has a anti-virus too and best off all its FREE!

you can download it from the following link:

    http://www.download.com/ZoneAlarm/3000-2092-10324064.html?tag=lst-3-2

If your using windows XP theres a link around for windows service pack 2 which also has a built in firewall, its also free and useful for updating your computer

    Hi ccml

I had a similar problem and got help on this board a while ago.

What solved it for me was Ad-aware (free to download if you are home user).

    Hope this helps.

Be careful that it's not just a Internet Explorer pop-up you are getting though... if it's a MESSENGER pop-up, they have a habit of getting through anything, because windows thinks they are legit... messenger pop-ups are designed for network adminstrators and the like to send messages to other machines on a system, and this facility is exploited by spammers....... they usually pop up on screen at odd times, even if you are not surfing, especially if you are on Broadband, and are large boxes sat right in the middle of your screen.

You can buy software to stop them etc, but its very easy to turn them off yourself.

    How to Disable Messenger popups...
1... Click on the Start button then Settings then open the Control Panel
2... Double click on the Administrative Tools icon.
3... Then in the window that opens double click on the Services icon.
4... In the right pane of the window that just popped up, find Messenger and double click it. (I have a Screenshot of this if you need it, PM me, I'm not sure how to post an image here)
5... Set it to manual then push the stop putton.

That should stop them. I've used this procedure in Win 2000 and xp, so can't vouch for any others, but don't see why it shouldn't work.

All of this might just be an elaborate simulation running inside a little device, sitting on someone's table.

Good point. You can also do it via this program too:

I agree with duncanc. Install Firefox and use it instead of Internet Explorer and you'll never see a single pop-up ever again!

Windows Messenger pop-ups look like this:
    messagepopup.gif

You can disable Windows Messenger by following the instructions given by XYZed, or download this script which removes it and tweaks your Registry to prevent a long delay when opening Outlook Express when Windows Messenger is removed or disabled.

To turn off Messenger (not to be confused with msn messenger), I use the plug in for AdAware, which you can get from the lavasoft.de site. I have never turned on or added any popup blocker but I have an antivirus, firewall, Adaware, Spybot Search & Destroy which I think are the main things that stop pop ups in the first place. Have a read through the "Security - Free" thread - it's at the top of this board. I do have Mozilla, but I don't get popups on Internet Explorer (though I do have other problems with it!).
    Torgwen.......... :) ...........
