People changing posts after reply/replies have been received is a problem as it can make such replies themselves seem nonsensical. Personal view is that ability to edit should be removed as soon as a reply is posted. As for posts having to be 'nice', I would suggest there is no reason for any comment or reply to be rude. Replies can disagree with other posts without becoming rude or abusive. Not that I am suggesting any of the content of this topic falls into that category.2

The top line of the post always carries a timestamp on when a post was last edited - so that can be useful. Etiquette generally also suggests that it's helpful if editing other than for a typo directly after posting that a little note added to the bottom of the post explaining the edit reason can be of assistance for clarity. The ability to edit can be incredibly useful and add to the usefulness of the forum when someone is corrected on something and they are then willing, for example, to go back to the comment and note within it that it has been drawn to their attention that the information they gave previously was incorrect, or unclear...that can avoid someone reading advice which may subsequently prove to cause them issues, and just acting on it without reading on further.
