Home insurance won't cover a phone that simply stops working.

Your home insurance policy will say what risks it covers - typically loss or damage caused by things like: fire, explosion, storms, floods, earthquakes, theft, attempted theft and vandalism, etc.

If your phone is still under warranty, you might be able to claim on that.

If you think the phone was faulty when you bought it, you might have a claim against the retailer.

Other than that, it's the same as anything else you own that wears out or stops working - if you want a replacement, you have to pay for it yourself.

(It's best not to contact your insurance company or attempt to make a claim, unless you're pretty sure the loss is covered by your policy.

Otherwise, you'll get no payout, but the "incident" and/or "failed claim" could be recorded on a central database, and your future insurance premiums could increase as a result.)

+1. Insurance covers unexpected one off events which damage your property. You could claim on your home insurance if it was stolen or destroyed in a fire. If you had accidental damage cover you could also claim if you dropped it or trod on it. However no home insurance policy is going to cover something that simply breaks down, through age, wear and tear or a manufacturing defect.

What you do now depends on the phone's age. If its reasonably new then complain to the retailer or make a claim on the warranty, like anything else you buy that just doesn't work. If it's many years old then it's probably just time to get a new phone.

Even if you had mobile insurance there could be a excess of £100 and you would likely receive a refurbished phone
