VHS tapes: how best to transfer them to DVD?

My old DVD player/VCR combi has given up the ghost and I'm looking to get a new hard drive recorder/ DVD recorder combi in its place.

My concern however, is transferring my old VHS tapes on to DVD. Somebody on here a while back alluded to a device which allowed you to upload tapes to your laptop/desktop, then transfer them to DVD. Anyone know much about this sort of thing?

I don't want to lose my most treasured tapes, so any advice will be gratefully received.smile.gif

It could have been worse. At least source code's not combustible, or you can bet somebody at McAfee would have lit it.

Why dont you buy a Dvd recorder. They are really cheap now.I have put all my Camcorder tapes on to dvds now.
  • if they're vhs tapes of movies that are available on dvd, just buy the dvds as they'll be better quality.

alternatively (i.e. forhome movies and rare films andthe like), you could either buy a dvd recorder and set it up in your video-dvd-tv setup and copy that way, or buy and anolog to DV converter if you have a dvd recorder in your computer. the analog to dv device will allow you to transfer the vhs footage to your pc from where you can burn a dvd disc of them.

Excuse my ignorance but the hot deals link is to an american site I've not heard of. Can you still order from there?

Also would the product be easy enough for a non-techie to use? Also what about disk space. I'm assuming a 1 hour mini dv tape would take up quite a lot of space on the PC.

I hooked up my old vhs to my pc with some leads and used a video editing programme I had. That way I was able to erase all those huge amounts where I had left the video cam on accidentally for 10 minutes and take out those clips of peoples feet and things

There shouldn't be a problem buying from 'dealextreme', however if things go wrong and the gadget in question doesn't work. Then 'kyle' who seems to be the owner has a tendancy to look the other way, just read through some of the product questions\details and you'll see what I mean.

He's there for your praise 'good deal Kyle', he dissapears when 'Where's my refund Kyle' is mentioned however :D

It maybe worth mentioning that I purchased a cable for I think £5 and used the dazzle software not the actual hardware to do the same thing. The hardware itself I couldn't get to work with WinXP Mce and dazzle weren't much help, but bypassing their hardware and using their software and the cable I purchased and things worked out.

Perhaps those that purchase the dealxtreme offer could report back on their findings so we know whether it's a good deal or not?
