Hi , Ive just fallen for an Amazon scan on my mobile , I was expecting a parcel , but had to nip out to leave my car to be serviced. About an hour. Got back and a text saying Id been out and they couldnt deliver, please reschedule . Seemed sods law, but not odd. Anyway the link they gave to reschedule had the word evri in it and I didnt think anything of it . Copied it manually onto my laptop and clicked - it said to wait it was making sure I was a human . Nothing happened at all , just a blank screen with that continued message. Went back to my phone and clicked on the link there to reschedule . This did work and took me to same human check and details to make sure the right person was getting the message. Put in my name and address dob but stopped when it said a charge of 79p for second shot at deliver, and realized probably a scam. Rubbish at anything Techy , but changed my pw on Amazon , clicked on my shield on bottom of my screen and decided a MS offline scan might be the best option out of the 3 offered - said it more likely to pick up sneaky things. . Clicked on MS Def one and it asked if I wanted to allow this app to make changes to my device ? As Im clueless with such things and now neurotic that everything is a scam , I dont know , do I want it to make changes? Does that just mean good changes to weed out anything malicious , or is it a scammer Ive downloaded trying to get more into my machine .Can I trust defender offline scan if I got it direct from my laptop bar ? Should I allow it to 'make changes?'

Thanks , I forgot MSE takes notice of paragraphing , been using sites too much that ignore any spacings one puts in . Re your comment of Defender being nothing to do with what Im talking about (which is possible access to my pc/phone by malware) Im not tech minded, but it didnt seem unreasonable to me to turn to the security shield and look up the options mentioned there that detect malware issues . However , Ill just ring Evri to reschedule .

Don't ring Evri, especially don't ring Evri using any contact details from a dodgy text. And I don't think you can ring Evri anyway.
If it's an Amazon order then use the Amazon website to deal with any redelivery instructions.1 -
ANGLICANPAT said:However , Ill just ring Evri to reschedule .Why?They just deliver it. Their relationship is with the company who sent it, not you.If you are expecting a delivery then contact those you've bought this from.Although it might have been better not to commit yourself to other external matters when you're expecting a delivery. If you know you had a car service due why schedule a delivery for the same day? You know what's going to happen, especially if you end up with one of those irritating all day delivery windows.1

Just to answer your actual question @ANGLICANPAT
If you select an offline scan with Windows Defender, you do get the dialogue box asking you to authorise the program to run. You can safely click the yes box.
Unlike other people here, I can see no problem at all in running a scan. At worst, you are wasting a few minutes of your time and a few watts of electricity. No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?2 -

Should I allow it to 'make changes?'That is simply the User Account Control (UAC) which is Windows asking you for permission to run a programme which can make changes to your machine, if it needs to make changes - you will normally see it when installing apps, or running certain types of scans and certain types of software.Defender can make such changes, ie. it can remove from your device and/or quarantine any apps etc. that it finds suspicious, so it asks for permission to be able to do that. The usual UAC looks like this, (if you are logged in as an Administrator*), but where this one says "Microsoft Management Console" yours would have said something about Defender because Defender was what you wanted to run. There are a couple of variants for different things, for example:
*if you are not logged in as an administrator then there is one that asks for your Administrator name and password before you can use/run certain things.

GDB2222 and Newcad Thank you both very much for answering my question -very helpful . I will run the scan , just for the experience if nothing else, now I know its safe to agree to it. ( Regarding going out when expecting a parcel, . Id already booked the car in 2 weeks before and the delivery information given was for my parcel was 'between' certain dates .)0
