Wrong Address at Companies House!

Options
Someone I know went out of business and they have started a new business however this time they have mixed up the address on Companies House, debt collectors appeared at their home forcing them to re-mortgage shortly after.

I notice they are using the Postcode of their mothers house and a neighbours door number in our street which makes no sense.

They are also giving other mixed up addresses for the directors with one having their old business address which is now an empty building with a To Let sign on it.

Maybe it's none of my business but I wondered if it is legal!

A door number on your street? Surely it's a door number on the street associated with the postcode? I mean most streets have a number 4 etc.

Is this for the details of the company's registered address or for the directors themselves or both?

If they've said they are door 506 and the postcode of the road only goes up to 20 then Royal Mail will return the letters from Company's House as the address does not exist and that will trigger Company Houses processes.

I have checked the numbers and they are from a different postcode, you are correct that this is the directors mainly so maybe you are allowed to make up directors addresses, it seems to me they are worried about debt collectors coming for them at a later date because it is only now they doing this.

I know the addresses from the first business they had and they have basically jumbled the house numbers and postcodes up and patched them together to make up the new director addresses.

If you look up the addresses they would not come up on a database in this combination.

I am concerned about what they are doing as a friend and they have been in debt most of their lives so maybe it's innocent but I just wondered.

The postie tends to be more practical than that... if the house number and street name combination exists they'll deliver it. They may get a little annoyed as it will be in the wrong order in their bag if the postcode is wrong.

The address of the company itself tends to be the most important thing given its the incorporated body which can just cease to exist etc and hence needs the transparency. Address of directors should be correct but they dont have to be their home addresses, many statutory directors use the companies address as their own on the Companies House listing.

This doesn't make sense.  How could a debt collector force someone to remortgage?

How could debt collectors chasing the limited company's debts force the individual to remortgage? Doesn't make much sense.

Sorry I did not mean to say "the debt collector forced then to re-mortgaged" but they re-mortgaged the house shortly after debt collectors came knocking on the door after money when their old business failed.

  • I will contact Companies House to ask if it is legal to put false addresses for Directors.

Still doesn't make much sense. I doubt the address on Companies House was relevant to the scenario.

Companies House do not verify addresses that are given to them.  So people can and do give the wrong address to Companies House.

depends if there was a personal guarantee in place from the director in favour of the company. Debt collectors can call that in if they have gone through the right steps to get there.
If the director was then foolish enough to have their own house in their own name then that house is an asset that is vulnerable under the guarantee, hence remortgage to release funds from it.
