Hello. Can anyone answer? This seems weird from a company.
Everyone including myself has been asked to provide 'proof' of NI number, either through the original card, many years ago or now been told via a P60? Some have submitted the old card format, some don't have it, so now they're saying, p60 is fine, even though we've been there for years and had regular wage slips and  p60s? Anyone heard of this before?  I assumed if you've a NI number and been paying tax for 30 odd years, why the need? I was just wondering if someone can shed light why they're asking. Thank you

Its not clear, but is the company you are referring to your employer? But, if so, surely they already have your P60? Or is it an prospective employer?

What have they said when you asked why they need it? Employers do have to ensure that their employees are legally entitled to work in the UK - might be related to that?

We have all been there for years, monthly wage slips, yearly P60s. Tax code correct. I was just wondering if something was changing that I didn't know about. I've never had in my working time been asked for proof of something they already have???
They just say, they need proof?

You can request a letter with it on from HMRC, I had to do this a few years ago when applying for a job.

  • Or just print it from your Personal Tax Account.

OP has already said they have a P60, so can give them that.

The question is why they are being asked, and its not clear if they've actually asked their employer.

We've asked the employer why and nothing given other than, we need proof. I am just asking, is something changing( government, I don't know?) that I need to know about really? It just doesn't make sense to ask for it?

I doubt anyone here will know, other than guessing.

eg, could it be that their systems were manual 30+ years ago and they've found at least 1 employee who has had the wrong NI number on their PAYE, so are wanting to make sure no-one else is in that position.

Thank you for you time. It's only been established since 2017? I just wasn't sure why this would occur.  Thank you anyway.
  • They want to validate that everyone is legally entitled to be working, and they can’t just ask a subset of people without appearing to discriminate.

But does having a National Insurance number mean you are guaranteed to be working legally?
