I've seen articles and comments here re Barclays closing expat accounts.
My parents love in Spain and this happened to them. Barclays again claimed to have written by post to them but they never received the letters.
Once the account closed Dad contacted them, and completed the form they sent him. This should have resulted in them receiving their money into their Spanish accounts. No money arrived.
He chased and chased.
They then sent another form. Their solicitor helped him complete it and sent it with all the requested info in May. Nothing.
She wrote to them. Nothing.
My Mum died in August which has been, of course, awful. I'm trying to help Dad and I have Power Of Attorney.
2 weeks ago I wrote to them, including copies of the form, the POA, death certificate, everything. I gave them 2 weeks to pay, or t least contact us.
Nothing.
So today I shall go into the local branch and see if they can help. If not, legal action time.
Awful situation. My Dad is poorly himself, having some early dementia issues, and deeply distressed at the loss of Mum. They'd been married for 57 years. Barclays are just making this worse.
Fingers crossed.

Was this an ex-pat account, ie held with Barclays International, or are they ex-pats but were trying to hold a regular Barclays UK account? On the basis you mention going into your local branch I am guessing they weren't with Barclays International unless you happen to live in the channel isles.
What address did they have on the Barclays account? UK or Spain?
Legal is rarely the right way to go against a bank, your better off logging a complaint and escalating to the Ombudsman which is a no risk route whereas you may end up having to pay their solicitor fees if you go to court and lose.0 -

I have to say their bereavement team were really good sorting out an issue I had (even though the person hadn't died at that point). The rest of Barclays, not so good.OP, if you speak to Barclays make sure they understand the full facts - they have different processes for different types of account and circumstances and if the wrong process is started it won't necessarily be picked up and corrected.0
