HMRC letter

Hi Not sure if this is the right place to post this.
I have received a letter today from HMRC for late filing penalties dating back to 2013/2015.
This is the first time they have contacted me. I did run a business back then and had an accountant who dealt with all my returns.
I am aware that HMRC can persue you for a long way back.
I do not work and only receive benefits. Amount is not small £5000. Do I contact them and explain my situation and try and make arrangement to pay or do I need to do anything else. Know this won’t go away now but we own our house and hubby has Alzheimer’s and I and now unable to work. We do own our home outright. I’m 65 so no chance of getting mortgage or even a loan.
Any advice welcome.

If the accountant is still around then I'd firstly be approaching them to ask why they don't appear to have done what you were paying them for....0

After I posted this I had a look and they are no longer around sadly. He was independent accountant.0
