I live in the UK, my sister lives in Republic of Ireland and this is where my dad lived who passed 4 years ago.
sister and I not amicable, solicitor resolved probate 6 months ago when dads house sold and used an accountant to finalise inheritance tax etc. 3 weeks ago my sister messages ( we haven’t spoken for years) and says she has had contact with revenue in Ireland who say she owes more tax. It seems the accountant didn’t take into account some funds we were given from dads bank account 2 years ago as an interim. (167k in euro ) tax is £55k each to be paid back.

So I have 2 questions , the first is how did the revenue know ? The accountant didn’t until my sister contacted him as she somehow had raised alarm bells with the revenue. The second is , as I live in the UK and no revenue have contacted me only the accountant saying he is obliged to tell me, how can anyone chase me for it ?
I am so cautious as to what is going on here as it seems to me my sister has thrown me in at the deep end. ( she is executor of the will ) .
Any advice please

This is Capital Acquisitions Tax which is charges to 33% hence €55k on €167k you each received. This tax is paid by the recipient which is straight forward as far as your sister is concerned but I don’t know how they get yours or indeed if they can.
Irish revenue would know because like HMRC they have access to their residence banking records, the accountant / solicitor however would only know if you and or you sibling told them.1 -
That’s what I thought, my sister has obviously told the accountant as he said he’s obliged to tell Irish revenue . I don’t reside in ireland, have an address there or anything . My tax on rest of inheritance was calculated by the accountant and paid to Irish revenue. So if I don’t pay, I wonder what the consequences would be ?0
