So needing to get a will in place - Is there an inexpensive way of putting one together without spending a fortune - it would be simple if i die my hubby gets it all if he dies i get it all and when we have both die the kids get it split between them 50/50 eldest child executor after one of us dies. Also any advice on protecting assets if event of having to go into care home.

Not such a simple will if you want to put something like a immediate post-death interest trust in place to protect your assets in the case of a surviving partner going into care or then getting married again. See a solicitor.0

'if i die my hubby gets it all' doesn't work here in Scotland.
In Scotland, children cannot be completely disinherited by their parents. For moral and social reasons, the law here has always provided children of a deceased with a basic level of protection even if a child is not mentioned in the will of a parent. This is known as the child’s entitlement to Legal Rights.
Lots of charities here in Scotland are part of the National Free Wills Network. This will put you in touch with trusted solicitors in your local area who will write a simple will for you at no cost. The charity of your choice hopes you will include something for them in your will but that is voluntary.
In my own case I chose the Red Cross, who I support anyway, to pay for a local solicitor to write my own will. I didn't have to pay anything.
Here is an example from another charity (Shelter Scotland) https://mynetworkportal.org/ShelterScotland1 -
