Travel Insurance for Group Bookings

A number of questions on Travel Insurance

In the past we have had annual travel insurance to cover my wife and I for holidaying both in the UK and abroad. We look for the best offers each year based on our travel plans

We have booked a mansion in Scotland for my 70th birthday in August next year and are inviting up to a dozen family and friends to join us. We are paying for the entire accommodation and have already paid a substantial deposit. It is likely we shall also be taking a holiday abroad earlier in the year and occasional UK breaks.

• What insurance do we need to cover the cost of the accommodation should anything go wrong with the availability of the property, our booking being cancelled or reneged upon, or if an incident, health or otherwise, affects ourselves or members of our group resulting in us having to cancel?

• Would we need an insurance covering all members of the group or just ourselves?

• Would such a holiday booking be covered by an annual policy for my wife and I or does it require a single trip insurance because it relates to a group? Thinking about cancellation of the group booking rather than personal cover for everyone.

• What pitfalls should we look out for in the cover and Ts & Cs?

• Are there any specialists offering cover for this type of travel insurance?

Insurance covers the travellers share of the costs, irrespective of who's actually paid for it so whilst you may be paying for it each family member would either need their own insurance or be covered on a group policy were, for example, you to get ill and want to cancel the whole thing. 

Note that travel insurance covers specific perils like illness and not every possible eventuality. The property owner reneging on the agreement, for example, is unlikely to be covered but you'd have other options like a chargeback.
