    Is the mom in receipt of any income dependent benefits at all?  Or likely to be?  This might be the best way to ensure the money is kept separate.  If that £1k was sufficient to tip mom above a allowed savings limit then there would be very real and difficult circumstances as a result.  

    Not suggesting that as a single mom she's automatically in receipt of UC or similar but this logic might be something that would assist in getting the ££ into a JISA or similar.

    I don't think the child's money will count as the mum's for benefit purposes.
    But it does muddy the waters if they aren't organised about it.

    I think I would treat all the greats the same: a message to each set of parents stating that you'd like each child to have the money ring-fenced until they are 18, so please can you have details of any JISA already held, and could they open one if not.
