So I turn it can hear the gas can also hear the turning switch has clicked into place and than turn it again and than it goes off, but eventually after many turns the fire comes on.
Why does take many turns for it to turn on?
How to fix?

Call a gas engineer - has it been serviced/checked since it was installed? I think you really need to ask a professional as trying to fix it yourself is a disaster waiting to happen.1

If the gas is being lit, but the fire goes out once the dial is released its probably a failed thermocouple.
If the gas doesn't light it could be a failed piezo starter, or the gap between the spark generator and the gas supply pipework is dirty or too wide.
Both easy fixes by a qualified engineer.0 -
Is your username linked to your gas fire?
I think you need to get it checked out.0 -
Be aware that gas fires are a separate ticket to gas central heating so you need a gas safe engineer who can work on gas fires. The gas safe register lists what types of work engineers are able to work on. You can search the register by location to find someone near to you.1
