Damp ceiling previous wet verge roof repair

Hi recently moved into new home to find in the corner of two rooms the ceiling and walls are damp after rain. I can see that the verges have been repaired on the gable ends with new mortar.
I've also noticed that the old mortar has some kind of sealant between the mortar and fascia, but this is missing from the new mortar so there's a gap.Should this be filed and is that likely where the water could be coming in?
What do they usually fill it with?
Have a roofer coming out to look at it but just trying to get an idea beforehand.
