Possibly because a number or organisations insist on a passport/driving licence as proof of id so you are not being discriminated against but merely treatef the same as everyone else.
  • In other words up the creek without a paddle.    Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.       I dont go abroad so dont require a passport and no longer drive because of health condition.

    That is particularly galling.

The following will go partway to answering but still isn’t ideal:

I will search for something better …

There's definitely no 'a' in 'definitely'.

I bit the bullet several years ago and applied for a passport even though I have no intention of going abroad (I don't drive). I was executor for my late brother, with a house to sell, and found that the majority of the organisations involved (banks, solicitors, estate agents, etc) insisted on passport or photo driving licence to do ID checks

I think the price has gone up since I applied ,but I look on the cost per year (£7-£8) as a small inconvenience compared to trying to jump through the hoops of identifying and agreeing alternatives for each individual organisation - if a photo is required then for most of us there really aren't any other acceptable documents.

I consider my passport as a de-facto id card rathe than something that allows me to travel abroad.
  • I've not used my passport to travel in 30 years but it's worth the roughly £8 a year to keep it valid as a universal form of identification, I do have a driving license but it still seems worth keeping my passport.

The UK had National ID cards earlier this century but they were abolished. Their introduction and withdrawal were highly politicised but that’s how democracy works. Polls suggest there is support for their reintroduction. There’s a voluntary photo ID scheme recognised by some public agencies, but not by HMRC.

If your Passport was renamed ‘…and ID’ would you feed differently about buying one?

I'd feel very discriminated against if they let anybody without I.D register as me and get up to something.

And can you vote? But perhaps better to have what anonymity while you can.

Discrimination means treating someone 'less favourably' than someone else, because of: age. disability. gender reassignment. marriage and civil partnership and other characteristics and some activities illegal.
