Is the pressue reducing valve likely to be adjustable?  If so, am wondering if I reduce the output pressure a little, and see what impact that has, if any on how frequently the pump starts at night.  The pressure at the bathroom level is pretty good, so a slight reduction won’t make a lot of difference.

Yes, it will have an adjustable dial on it. You could try and reduce it, but if there isn't any night time water usage then it's unlikely to be the main issue - the pump only sees the pressure up to the valve, so that length of pipe should be primed (regardless of the valve setting) and then the pump switches off until water is used again in the morning.

Which makes me think it's more to do with the integral sensors within the pump.
