Presumably she travels to this store on a regular basis anyway to do her shopping?

If so, she can take it in and return it then - no need to make a special trip - which negates the cost of the bus fare.

Which seems fair. She bought something which it turns out she couldn't use, so she's getting her money back.

You make it sound like she's due compensation, but for what? Not being able to put tomato juice in a meal, presumably?

Before editing the post, OP originally said that the rotten tomatoes were actually added to a dish being cooked and this contaminated it, with the smell putting everyone off their food, etc, hence my first reply in response to the pre-edited version.
