Octopus vs Ovo, which one is going to make more sense?

We have an EV we’ve just bought although unlikely to do significant mileage as no commute but will be able to schedule charging overnight. We have an air source heat pump, large 4 bed house, electric only, reasonable insulation, so we manage on relatively low demand usually around 2000kwh a year heating, normally would run heating mostly in the day because ambient temperatures are better and therefore efficiency better.

Also have a newborn baby arriving imminently, we will use cloth nappies like our first so there will be lots of washing and tumble drying this winter and I suspect we will be up in the night a lot but don't have smart appliances that we can schedule other than EV. I also think we will probably not scrimp so much on heating this winter.

I’d already triggered the switch to octopus a couple of days ago before even realising OVO had some options but I’m in cancellation window, not sure how easy it is to manage an octopus tariff, any thoughts on what might work best for circumstances?

I suspect with your heat pump etc Octopus are going to have some tariffs that will suit you well. Hopefully when you initiated the switch you used a referral code from a friend or family member? If not, ask around to get one as that will earn you each £50 energy credit, and I’m pretty sure you can contact Octopus to have this applied retrospectively so long as it’s directly after the switch is requested.

I would stick with Octopus, as they also offer a heat pump tariff (cosy). Their EV tariffs also works differently with the whole house getting the cheap rate during the off peak slot, I thing Ovo only apply it to the electrons that end up in the car.
  • I've never been convinced that the Octopus "Cosy" tariff is suited to a heat pump, although that is how it is marketed.  I'm on the Eon Next NextDrive tariff because you get a full 7 hours of night-rate electricity that is slightly cheaper than the Octopus rate, 6.9p per kWh.

Also, for both the Octopus Intelligent Go tariff and the Ovo Charge Anytime tariff, unless you have the right make of car or the right make of charger you won't be able to use either of them.  I don't so can't.

  • Hmm I’m currently with eon next until this switch goes through or I cancel. I have not seen this special night rate advertised! Maybe I should look into as can potentially run some high power appliances, charge car & have some heat pump use overnight.
