Advice on car repairs - hit and run

Options
Hello,

have abit of a dilemma here and I am looking for some
advice. Basically my car was crashed into while parked and I have no 3rd party information. If I go through my insurance it will go down as a fault and I will need to deal with the excess
and further increases on my premiums.

The good news is the cost to repair isn't looking to be that
high and I might be able to get the CCTV footage.

I continue with the repair myself and let's say in a month time i get the footage can I claim that back?

Location UK

Thanks

  • "Fault" in claim terms comes down to whose pocket it ends up coming out of.

If you can produce evidence that ends up with somebody else's insurance paying, it's not at fault.
If your insurer end up paying, it's fault.

And you will be advised as a minimum to notify your insurance company as that is very likely to be a term of your insurance contract.

    Hello,

I have notification on my insurance down as a none-fault. I also reported to the police and have a crime number.

My question is mostly about if I pay for the repairs myself and later down the line the police manage to get me the CCTV footage can I claim anything back?
  • That'll be up to the insurer of the driver.

..if it's relatively low cost I would just pay myself and get it done.....saves the hassle and possible extra cost come renewal time??

You can small claims the driver yourself for the reasonable cost of the repair if you can identify him.

No doubt the keeper wasn't driving.....
(DVLA will sell the keeper details to anyone with money who can fill in a box claiming they have the right to know)

I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....

Yes, you can claim back the cost of the repair direct from the other parties insurance if they accept the evidence that their client was at fault. If you have CCTV this should be straightforward.
  • Thanks all.

The cost for repair if the steering so far I was quoted £217 for the strut replacement.
The body repair for the fender I assume will cost more :( it's this part of the repair that is doing my head in more.
I am unable to open the passenger door because of it.

Your own insurers may or may not be interested, that comes down to the terms of your policy.

A claim against the third party/their insurers aren't bound by policy terms and so you could claim against them directly if you'd had the repairs done. Just ensure you get quotes and invoices in writing (physical or electronic) to support the claim
