HMRC letter says I owe 3k Tax Credit

Few months ago received a letter from HMRC claiming I owe 3k Tax Credit from 2012. I never applied for Tax credit.
I called HMRC and they told me my NI number does not show any money owed. They advice me to write a letter to the debt collection department to which I did and then this week I got another letter saying I now owe £3100 as it at has 0.66p per day interest.
I called HMRC again and it was the same thing my NI is clean with no debt owed and this time they advised me to go to Citizens Advice Bureau.
Has anyone experienced this?

I haven't experienced it, but make sure you send any letters by recorded delivery.
Ask them for evidence you have received the payments and which bank account they were paid into.1 -

I have no idea why the debt collection department keeps sending me these letters. I could not speak to anyone who had a clue what was going on, they even advised me not to pay it.
The number on the letter ie genuine and it was the one I called and they were clueless as what was going on.
My kids are in their 40s I was not even eligible for Tax credit at 2012.
I did send the letter by recorded mail but can't seem to find the receipt with the tracking number.0 -

My possible theory is someone claimed it using my name or it's HMRC error. How can their computers show no such debt but I keep getting the letters. I can't even talk to anyone who even can help with the number provided on the letter.0 -
It could be that someone has traced a debtor and wrongly connected them to you.
Who is the debt agency as those HMRC use are generally known.?Saying you don’t know about a debt or denying it is you is a common tactic by debtors trying to avoid paying a debt so letters can be ignored. The debt company will have no paperwork about the debt, just the amount of the debtTell them the debt is in dispute and to send it back to HMRC.1 -

The letter says call the number on the letter for advice and how they can help and to make a payment . It's the number I called and they have no clue what's going on.
