Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen, 2023 release) - need advice

Hi,

I need advice on this. A few days ago, I bought this Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen, 2023 release) since it's on offer with Prime Deal, anyway, when it arrived, I set it up, but when it tried to update software, it stated Network error while updating, so I click on my WIFI on the device (Echo show) a few times, and it updated it, anyway, a few hours later, after listening to smooth radio on it, it just turned itself off and it won't come back on, I unplug it, and it still won't come on, so I requested a return for it, and I bought a new one today, and I got it delivered just now and I set it up, but the second one is still doing the same where it states update error.

I checked through the Alexa app and it states connection poor, and it also states Wi-Fi network unavailable, I have just rang Sky up to check my broadband speed and they advised me that because I am on a low broadband speed, she advised me to upgrade to Sky Full Fibre 150 as she thinks, that because I am on a low speed of broadband, she thinks that is what the issue is causing it with this Echo show, but could she be right? or was she just saying that so I will sign up for that Full Fibre? as at the moment I am on Sky Broadband Superfast 35.

Has anyone else experience this before?

I will be listening to smooth again while I am having a few beers tonight, but I just hope it doesn't do the same again.

Any advice would be welcome, thank you in advance.

  • When you say it turned itself off, do you mean powered off or just lost connection?

Up to 35Mb/sec is more than enough to run your Echo thingy.  If you go on your computer or phone and go to a speed test site (speedtest.net or fast.com) you can do a real time speed test to see what speed you are actually getting through your wifi.  note this will be slower than what you receive by cable into the house.  Bear in mind that Netflix recommnend 2Mb/sec or faster to stream a film, so if you have 2Mb/sec+ you should be fine.

The problem could be your router (our Virgin Media one is rubbish) or other hardware like cables etc.  or it could be the software in your device not liking your router settings.

In any case, if it's turning off randomly whilst connected, it would seem like an Echo decice problem more than a network problem.  I would send it back for a refund.  I would also not buy a faster connection just because the call handler says so, they can stretch the truth and lie to make a sale or an upgrade

Thanks, it powered off, and it won't come back on when I plugged it in, it's just a blank screen with nothing coming on. So, I had to buy a new one today and it got delivered today and the second one is still doing the same with the network error.

The lady also said, it might be because I got loads of devises set up through WIFI on this small broadband speed, she thinks that is what's causing it.
