Taking a baby abroad?

My partner and I are going on holiday to Lanzarote on the 10th January 2008 for a week away with our baby daughter who will be nearly 4 1/2 months old and just wanting some advice about bring a baby abroad from people who have done so in the past.

She is bottle fed but just wanting advice on making feeds up, steralising bottles etc????

We have stocked up on sachets on formula rather than taking a tin but any other advice would be appreciated as getting a little nervous as it is so close.

Thanks in advance!

Dead easy - we did it with a 10 week old 20 yrs ago - & he's not stopped travelling since! LOL!

I guess you'll be s/c? In which case main issues will be checking the cot is safe - we've had some iffy ones in Spain over the years; and a car seat too (check that as well).

The flight'll be the worst bit - lots of water in a bottle (buy bottled after security to top up the measly amount you can take through), a dummy (if they'll use one!) and be prepared for a fractious babe for a bit.

Have you been to Lanzarote before?

  • Never been to Lanzarote been to other Canary Islands though.

We are not bringing the car seat with us but just bringing a stroller. We are self catering if cot is not up to scratch she will sleep in the bed with us.

Also regarding the bottle thing, your only allowed 100ml now right? so if I bring some powder formula through to departures a cafe will give me hot water to make a feed up won't they?

    Hello

We took our 2 kiddies ( 8 and 8 months) to Spain earlier this year

Steralizing bags avaliable from boots just add bottled water and away you go not cheap but good

Disposable steralised bottles avaliable from large supermarkets also pre packed cartons of made up milk ideal for travel

dont forget a little parasol for buggy really is a must to keep sun off

look up poggy on the net its a pop up travel cot we got one and its great as the cot didnt look great shakes folds down and awayto nothing and weighs nothing to speak of 2llb at most

we took a tin of formula in case

we also took all his food jars and rusks etc lol

ermmm we worked out how many times we changed his nappy a day and took that amount plus one days worth in case!

boots do a own label swim nappy that was really quite good

good luck have a good holiday

    Went to canaries last May.

If you can pre-order anything you need for the baby and its reasonably priced do so, we forgot to hire a high-chair and ended up hiring one when we got there, a cheap Ikea one, the hire cost for 2 wks was more than it would have cost to buy it

We took a carton of milk onto the plane. It was over 100ml but the security saw sense and waved us through with it. We were worried about the plane, but a combination of a feed and the noise and motion of the plane made ours sleep for the majority of the flight. If you can hold off the feed til your on the flight may be worth a try.

As we were on holiday we wanted a break from making up formula - we took a stack of the pre-made cartons, ours was on SMA which you cannot get in the Canaries and we had an older child with a luggage allowance - Most other brands are available there.
If you are using powder it is probably advisable to use bottled water but check on the sodium content (less than 20mg/litre) and watch for other mineral content (Evian was available and is recommended )

Nappies are Dodots which I think are equivalent to huggies

Normally when we go to Europe we stick to british time which means the kids are out later at local time (if this makes Sense) in the canaries as it is GMT we fed ours at his normal time on an evening then put him in the buggy where he fell soundly asleeps as we strolled along the seashore allowing us to go for meal in a restaurant - worth a try?

The nights can be fairly cool so bring some warm clothes for the baby if you are going to take him out in the evenings.

    Most importantly Enjoy yourself

I took my sons away when they were babies. I took sterilising tablets, and left bottles etc., soaking in the bathroom sink to sterilise them.

We took a travel kettle for making up feeds in the room and rinsing the bottles as there wasn't one in the room. You should get a kettle with self catering, but you might want to check.

I took all the nappies with us, but just bought a huge pack with a carry handle on, and sellotaped a piece of paper with the flight details onto it, to save room in the suitcases!

The cots we had were fine, but the Spanish seem to think babies like pillows, so we had to keep taking it back out of the cot after the maid had tidied up the room.
Here I go again on my own....
  • Are you sure you want to go on holiday without a car seat? Unless you know you won't be taking transport it is advisable. They drive like lunatics in Spain.
