  • Unlike in UK/Europe which has a ‘duty of care’ policy, If the OP’s weather cancelled flight was a purely domestic flight within the USA (i.e. not part of a ticketed international itinerary) then airlines in the USA have no obligation to provide anything hotel/food wise etc during the delay (amenities the US call them):

From the US Department of Transportation:

     https://www.transportation.gov/airconsumer/fly-rights#Delayed-and-Cancelled-Flights

Thus no breach of contract to claim against.

Travel Insurance would usually cover it, however if it was an exclusion within the OP’s policy (it is often excluded in the cheaper policies) then that avenue is closed off.

Many US Citizens wish there was a ‘duty of care’ policy in the US in the case of disruption – however would not like to pay the increased flight costs to US airlines for providing then – hence they don’t!

Probably one to simply be wise after the event and ensure any travel insurance purchased does cover this sort of event.

OP - why have you not claimed on your travel insurance?
Unfortunately my travel insurance doesn't cover this.
Although I cannot think of any reason why a decent policy wouldn't.
The reason I asked is that they say it didn't cover it, rather than they claimed and were told it wouldn't - an important difference. The plane was cancelled due to bad weather, there must be a reason why they wouldn't pay out unless it was the cheapest possible junk policy going!

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
