Can you buy new back boilers?
Options
Hi - I've got an old baxi bermuda back boiler which is on it's last legs and it's also got a horrid fire front - you all know the one I mean. Anyway, we're perfectly happy with the back boiler and not bothered about a combi - only two of us and we find it really cheap to run. I was wondering if you can buy new back boilers - cannot bear the thought of the upheaval of getting a combi fitted - our house is fondly named as the "house that Jack built" due to the pair we bought it from and absolutely every pipe is totally boxed in and to get a combi in will involve ripping out quite a bit of my kitchen out! I don't need to replace any of the radiators if that's any help. Thanks for your advice.

I dont think you can anymore to be honest. We had one of those with a back boiler and the horrid looking fire !! and have just had a combi boiler put in as you cant get new ones. Brother in law has got same problem, hes brought his ex council house and they have the same back boiler with fire and its needing to be replaced but their only option is a complete new system due to no longer being able to get the back boilers. I think he said they have been quoted about £4,000.
Sorry if thats not really what you wanted to hear0 -
Arrghhhhh - guess we shouldn't buy ex local authority houses huh! Thanks anyway jaxxy00, it's not so much the money (I'd kept some aside from the sale of our other place - I'm not rich), it's just the upheaval - may just need to bail out for a couple of days.................... Eva0

Have to say the heating work we had done wasnt too bad ( we opted for wall mounted pipes just above the skirting in the bedrooms to save having the laminate flooring up. Then they come a few months later to do the rewiring (now that was a total nightmare) and we had to take the flooring up afterall. If only we had known we could have took it up to start with. Thats having a council property for you though, as ours still is.0 -

You can still get replacements - google on a product like "BAXI BERMUDA" - you shouldn't get them fitted because unenvironmentally friendly and regulations to stop them but you are allowed to get them REPLACED if you can persuade the engineer it is impractical to use another system; there's an element of judgement but also factors like if you'd have to change rooms for the boiler, if you have a suitable room for a combi with outside wall, how long the new flue would have to be etc...
If pipework relocation impractical etc...

A few of the baxi fire fronts are now ok... well better than they were.... there's one that's almost inoffensive0 -
we changed from a baxi bermuda a few yrs ago to a new combi condensing boiler (in a bedroom cupboard).
took 2 days for the work. and would never go back to the old one.
far cheaper to run, heating bills are down by a third.
we bought a cheap (99 quid) gas fire from BQ to replace the old fire. we never use it. its purely for decor.Get some gorm.0 -
Still can't be bothered with the hassle but I guess there's nothing else for it! Oh well, happy new year to you all when it comes - having to take my doggie to the pub with me (I'm driving and everyone else seems to be going to the castle to see the Proclaimers). Dog to pub due to all the idiots in Scotland having a great fascination with fireworks.....if only they would set them all off at the one time my dog would be much happier! All the best for 2008 to you all. Eva0

This is great news, i don`t need one yet as my old Baxi with the naff fire front is still going strong but fantastic for future reference. I love my back boiler and the small bills that i get.
Thanks
