    There are a number of ways to go about this and in terms of outlay it could offer a good return on investment.
    You would require building control involvement  but essentially adding a ground floor en suite bedroom would increase value of property if minimal work needed to regain simple access from home.
    Short term/ holiday rentals offer the best return if there is demand in your area but be prepared to pay for cleaning and management fees if you are not able to do so yourself. You could specify minimum number of night stay.
    Renting the room to a lodger would qualify under rent a room scheme but they would require access to facilities such as kitchen and laundry room
