New cat & cleaning spray

Hi

What cleaning spray can I use that won't poison my cat?

I've just got my first cat and I'm still learning the dos and don'ts .  I normally use dettol spray to wipe down skirting, bannisters and everything else, but the Internet says dettol is toxic to cats.  Other disinfectants appear to be pet safe, but this might mean that they just eliminate odours.

Can any cat owners on here suggest a safe cleaning spray?  Thanks.

  • To be honest we never thought about that when we had our kitten.  but if you are worried, they do non-toxic cleaners and degreasers in most supermarkets (or at least ones without bleach).  You can also look up natural household cleaners, probably a mixture of lemon and vinegar I'd imagine.

Nancy Birtwhistle has a good reputation for non toxic, environmentally friendly home made cleaning products.

No idea if she is specifically cat friendly (which would be dreadful if she's not!) but it might be worth your time looking at some of her ideas.

Beyond that I'd add my own tuppence worth - bleach smells too much like cat p so don't use it unless absolutely necessary as you will attract your cat to that spot.  And should your cat actually p somewhere inappropriate try rinsing the area with tonic water.  The quinine in it is bitter, so nasty to the nose, while getting rid of or covering sufficiently the p smells.

But frankly not sure why I'm telling you any of this when you haven't shared a picture of your lovely moggy!!!  Think of the picture as advice tax.

She's lovely.  Looks a lot like my Artemis who was mad as a basket of frogs.  She liked to sleep out on the lawn even when it was raining!!  Sadly this took its toll on her eventually and towards the end she developed very bad arthritis in her hips.

There's a book environmentally friendly cleaning products that use hydrogen peroxide, vinegar and isopropyl alcohol that you can make at home?
