How to stop wordpad opening word files

Hi - got a new lappy for xmas and it does not have Word on it which is ok but i have a word file that i need and when i tried to open it it listed programmes which could do this and i ticked "wordpad" -it also checked a box saying "always use this programme".

Now wordpad cannot read the file so I downloaded a word read programme but the computer automatically opens the file with wordpad.

I have trawled round and round my settings but cannot work out how to stop wordpad opening the file.

Open explorer.

Tools>Folder options>File types

Find the file type and remove it. Then you can assign the correct program the next time you open it.

Open Windows Explorer

Find a .doc file

Right click the file

Click Open With
Click Choose Program
Click Browse and browse to your Word viewer
Put a check mark in the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file
Click OK
