Does my car insurance cancellation count? Or not?

I have a somewhat complex situation. Back in 2018, I insured my car through someone I believed to be a broker (turns out he wasn't; he was just a guy helping people get insurance). A couple of weeks after setting up the policy, I was asked if I had arranged it directly or through a broker. I admitted it was through a broker, and the insurer informed me that they don't allow that. As a result, they said they needed to cancel my policy, explaining that it was a security measure. At the time, I didn’t realize how impactful a cancelled policy could be, so I just agreed and continued to be a happy customer of theirs for the next few years.

The problem began when I tried to get insurance with a different company. They asked, “Have you ever had your insurance policy cancelled or voided?” I even contacted my original insurer to clarify, and they replied:

"Policy XXX was cancelled due to a fraud investigation. However, there were no concerns on our end as all your details were correct. The issue was that the policy was set up through a broker, which led underwriting to advise the cancellation. Underwriting also approved the setup of your new policy, and no fraud blocks were placed on the cancelled policy."

Now, every time I try to insure my car, I have to call and explain the situation. In every case, insurers tell me it’s fine and that they don’t count it as a typical cancellation. However, this causes me significant stress because I’m worried it could be used as an excuse to invalidate my policy if something goes wrong.

So, my question is: is there any way to resolve this once and for all? Do I need to report this cancellation, or am I going to live in fear that my policy might not be valid in the event of an accident? Is there a specific database where these cancellations are recorded? I’ve checked the MID database and couldn’t find any information about the cancellation, though I did see a policy that only lasted a few weeks.

CUE is the main insurance database for exchanging information, its also run by the MIB like the MID but its separate and so requires a separate dSAR

There are more than one type of cancellation of a policy and not all have to be declared to future insurers. If you phone your insurers and say you are thinking of changing your car to a Ferrari and want a quote to switch the car they may tell you they won't insurer such vehicles and so will cancel the policy at the point you give up your current vehicle. That you wouldn't need to declare, not even if you hadn't thought to ask before and just called up to make the switch and were told they couldn't.

on the basis they offered continued cover it doesn't look like something that needs to be declared but you'd probably have more comfort if you had it in writing from them that they dont think you need to declare it.

Clearly you weren't dealing with my Ex though, she didnt give too much sympathy for those that bought via unregulated brokers but then she worked for a company well known for only selling direct and 95% of the time it was someone they met in the pub that did it there and then for them

The green box "Request Form" is where you can do a CUE request on-line.

    It takes a month.
  • Thanks for you answer. I've already requested data from the CUE database. The only entry there is related to a claim where my wife hit another car. There is no other entries.
