Missing cheque cashed by someone else

I requested a cheque from Ulster Bank to close a savings account,  This was posted but never received by me. It was subsequently cashed by someone else.  I can't get the money back from them and wondered if anyone knew what I can do next please

Who do you mean by 'them', do you know who cashed it or are you saying that Ulster Bank are unable or unwilling to help?

I would raise a formal complaint to Ulster Bank and be taking action against them.  They need to take responsibility for making sure your money goes to the right person.
Maybe UB will ask you to report this to the police but UB should be able to trace who cached your cheque and where the money ended up.

I think we need to know more about the story... the fact the OP says they cannot get the money back from the person that cashed it does imply they know who it was. Its very different if UB sent a cheque, a random person intercepted the post and deposited it into a UB account than if it did safely get to the OP but their mate has sticky fingers and they stole it from their house and deposited it in a Danske account.

UB will be able to get a copy of the cheque, assuming it wasnt deposited digitally, on the bank will state the details of the account it was deposited into. If they can see who's name that account is in will depend if its one of their accounts or a competitors.

OP merely says they can't get the money back "from them" without clarifying who "them" are ... they could just as easily mean UB as the person who cashed the cheque. 🤷‍♀️

Agreed, but without clarification it's difficult to advise on possible route forward.

Cheques are generally crossed so can only be paid into the bank account of the payee.

Was the cheque taken by someone known to you with the same name/initials?

Does it matter, really?  The OP is asking what to do next, not for a definition of the word "them".
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

What to do next depends who the them is.

What he does will deeond on whether d the cheque was correctly delivered to his house and someone with access to his house took the cheque

or whether it was never delivered to his house.

There are some actions they can take irrespective of who "them" are; the likely outcome will vary however depending on who it was.

Lets hypothesis that "them" is their adult child, they may not want to report them to the police for theft and at the same time the bank will likely say that failure to report them indicates it wasnt unauthorised and as such it isn't their problem.

As a Motor insurer we would see cases where uninsured kid takes parents car for a joy ride but we will only consider it theft and unauthorised by the policyholder if there is a police report. If there isn't a police report then we consider the insured condoned it and so is personally liable for the damage caused
