I requested a cheque from Ulster Bank to close a savings account, This was posted but never received by me. It was subsequently cashed by someone else. I can't get the money back from them and wondered if anyone knew what I can do next please

I would raise a formal complaint to Ulster Bank and be taking action against them. They need to take responsibility for making sure your money goes to the right person.Maybe UB will ask you to report this to the police but UB should be able to trace who cached your cheque and where the money ended up.

UB will be able to get a copy of the cheque, assuming it wasnt deposited digitally, on the bank will state the details of the account it was deposited into. If they can see who's name that account is in will depend if its one of their accounts or a competitors.0 -
OP merely says they can't get the money back "from them" without clarifying who "them" are ... they could just as easily mean UB as the person who cashed the cheque. 🤷♀️Jenni x4

Agreed, but without clarification it's difficult to advise on possible route forward.

Cheques are generally crossed so can only be paid into the bank account of the payee.
Was the cheque taken by someone known to you with the same name/initials?

Does it matter, really? The OP is asking what to do next, not for a definition of the word "them".
If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.0 -

Lets hypothesis that "them" is their adult child, they may not want to report them to the police for theft and at the same time the bank will likely say that failure to report them indicates it wasnt unauthorised and as such it isn't their problem.
As a Motor insurer we would see cases where uninsured kid takes parents car for a joy ride but we will only consider it theft and unauthorised by the policyholder if there is a police report. If there isn't a police report then we consider the insured condoned it and so is personally liable for the damage caused1
