Important changes to our policy on selling e-bikes and baby toys

We're getting in touch to let you know that we're updating our policy for selling e-bikes and their batteries, chargers, conversion kits, and baby toys on ebay.co.uk. To ensure that these products adhere to UK safety standards when sold on our marketplace, from 31 October 2024 only eligible business sellers will be able to list them for sale in the UK. The impacted products are as follows:

  • E-bikes: This includes e-bikes and their batteries, chargers, and conversion kits. These products can only be sold by business sellers. Please note that used e-bike batteries will no longer be able to be sold on ebay.co.uk

  • Baby toys: Items for the use of children under 36 months can only be sold by business sellers registered in the UK

In addition to the criteria above, you’ll need:

  • An established history of active selling for at least 90 days, with 100 or more transactions and £1,000 or more in sales in the last 12 months

  • A track record of delivering positive buying experiences, including an account that’s Above Standard or Top Rated

  • To be compliant with all applicable laws, regulations, and eBay policies

  • To have registered for eBay managed payments and verified your identity

  • To provide great customer service, like delivering items on time

If you’re not registered as a business seller, you can learn how to get started on our help pageAny existing listings of these products from sellers that don't fulfil the new criteria will be temporarily hidden, starting on 31 October 2024, until the eligibility requirements are met. Don’t worry, you won’t lose your selling history, and your listings will be available again as soon as the eligibility requirements have been met.

These restrictions are part of our commitment to maintaining a safe marketplace for buyers and sellers. We appreciate that changes like this can feel frustrating, but we’re here to help.

The e bikes statement makes sense, a lot of the imported ones don't seem overly safe and I suppose if ebay ban us from selling steak knives due to the danger that someone might run amok- selling ebikes sort of makes sense.

The toy one is fairly usual at Christmas, although that statement implies it is now going to be for good going forward. Usually certain categories, toys usually, are prohibited to anyone other than authorised sellers for a period before Christmas. Private sellers will be only mildly inconvenienced as they should only have an occasional toy to sell- and Vinted still allow them there so there is an alternative market. The  ones being inconvenienced are the business sellers who do not quite currently meet the requirements by ebay to sell in certain categories- depending on how slow ebay are to update their systems- they could well miss the Christmas peak period.

It will be interesting to see if this spreads to other categories going forward to stop 'private' sellers undercutting them by misusing private seller accounts.

Lego should be fine as it's usually from age 3+, Duplo is going to be impossible now.

Thank you for that!  I totally missed the 36 months bit!   Phew!
  • Good thing really, especially the baby stuff, I'm sure there was a thing a few years ago where people were selling homemade bracelets or something for babies with small charms that could easily be swallowed.

Those were the dreadful dummy clips- lots of beads to make a chain for a dummy that baby obviously put in their mouth. Unfortunately you still see a lot of them on places like Vinted and marketplace, and also, surprisingly, on ebay still.

Does this apply to second hand baby "soft toys".
I sometimes sell small baby soft toys that are used but in good condition.
Can't  see any info on the subject on ebay.

The announcement doesn't specify that's it new only that are prohibited, so I suspect it is everything, new or used. Otherwise I suspect there will be a lot of new ' items being sold as used with 'please read the description. Apparently, and I haven't checked for myself, there are now a surprising number of baby toys being sold under the collectable category and business sellers are being urged to report them all.
