Dear Experienced savings & invetment folk
I have a closing 'cashiers cheque' from Wells Fargo from our time in Texas. The US bank account is now closed. This cheque expires soon. It is in my name and my wife's maiden name. HSBC took the cheque in and said it would be credited to my solo $ account. I have just received it back saying that they cannot accept it because it is not in both our names, countering their branch advice. HSBC cannot see a way forward but have raised a complaint, which is unlikely to help me in the time left. As I now have just 2 weeks left before the cheque expires, can anyone suggest how I can pay this in?
Thanks so much

Have you tried asking Wells Fargo to reissue the check with the correct names?

Thanks for your responses but yes, the account is closed. I will try to get them to send a new cheque but I suspect it must be in both names. Bizarrely, they wouldnt transfer electronically. And even then, I had to give a US address to send the cheque to as they wouldnt post overseas....!

For UK cheques, you used to be able to "endorse" the cheque - see about 1/3 way down here.Whether that still works / would work in this case I have no idea.

I just had a call back from HSBC. The ywill notallow a new joint account to be opened in my wife's maiden name. Even if I went in with her birth and marriiage certificate, they require 'most recent' ID.......Endorsing the cheque an paying out in cash might work I guess - I will ask Wells Fargo. It might need a trip to New York!

If you are carrying over $10,000 in "cash" you must declare this to the US Customs before leaving. https://www.cbp.gov/travel/international-visitors/kbyg/money
If it is over £10,000 equivelent you must declare this before entering the UK.
If you do not do this, they can confiscate all of it!!!

It will not work - 2 things - either get a new cheque in the correct names or ask them to send the money electronically to your account.0
