Car Insurance - NCD problem

I've earned 10 years NCD privately in the normal way before joining my company insurance policy. There was no gap in between the two policies starting. I've never had an accident or made a claim. I still drive my own personal car but my insurance is paid for by my employer for the last 2 years.
I've now left that employer and gone to get a personal policy again. Problem is that the corporate insurer will only say i have 2 years ncd and despite my getting a letter from my last personal insurer saying 10 years ncd, a big insurer has said that they won't consider the earlier 10 years but only the recent 2 years.
They say it's meeting periods to increase my ncd.
I'm not understanding why my 10 years with multiple insurers isn't considered "merging" but now this event 2 years is considered "merging"
Help please

How long was the last person insurance cancelled/ended exactly? I'm guessing it wasnt two years to the day?
If it was fractionally under 2 years and you can get the new policy started before the 2 years is up most insurers will accept your old proof of NCD
If its going to be over 2 years, even by a day, then Admiral is a consideration as they accept up to 3 years NCD (double check though as it may have changed again)
Other than that its down to the telephones to see if anyone will consider doing something for you0
