Wireless connection

I have a new laptop bought today running on vista. I have managed to get it to connect wirelessly but had to set "broadcasting SSID" on the router to on to achieve this. This is normally turned off when using an older laptop. When the new laptop was turned off and on again it didn't automatically connect and I had to turn on broadcasting SSID before it would.
Is there a way of getting it to connect automatically without having to have the broadcasting SSID on, the same as my old laptop does?
Many thanks
