If there is a debt on the account then the switch will be blocked.

I have been a customer of British gas England for over 30 years

Sounds like that's been a huge mistake in itself !  Before the Russian invasion of Ukraine anyone who had always remained with their legacy Gas Board supplier had probably ended up paying far more than necessary.
That's why Ofgem brought in their price cap to limit how much people who had never switched could be ripped off, often people who were offline or fearful of anything new.
It's not even as if BG were offering a luxury product and service with a Harrods price tag to match: what came down the pipe was exactly the same, and the service certainly wasn't top notch.

I have a relative who still gets their electric from "The Hydro" even though they have not been named that for decades.  Has never fixed or switched as "it is too complicated" and, as she is on a mile of her own poles, "they always tell her when they are going to work on her supply" even though that is nothing to do with her supplier but SSEN.
  • Hi,

I am currently claiming against British Gas due to a DPA breach.

My electricity is supplied by Octupus Energy however I kept receiving letters in my name from British Gas chasing for a debt of £6000.  The dates that they were claiming for I have been paying Octopus.

British Gas also negatively impacted my credit score because of said "unpaid debt".

Initially I just demanded they close they account down after supplying the evidence that they asked for.  Which they agreed to do.

A month later they continued to chase.  Again I demanded they close the account down and requested in writing that this had been done.

They sent me a text message stating "an account was set up by mistake, I am not a British Gas customer and have never been a British Gas customer so the account has been closed under a task ref:......."

Two months later I received a letter from debt collectors on behalf of British Gas and I also informed them that they are illegally holding personal data that they are not entitled to as I did not give permission nor entered any contract with British Gas.  (To be honest these guys were quite good and I have not heard from them since)

I called British Gas to pursue a complaint.  They were meant to respond in 10 days which they failed to.  I wrote them a letter and gave them a further 14 days and they failed to respond.  I wrote another letter as a follow up giving a further 14 days and they failed to respond.  I have since got a solicitor.

British Gas then contacted me and admitted to a data breach and offered £100 I advised that I already had a solicitor due to their lack of response.

British Gas have now been ignoring my solicitor and not responded to anything therefore we are now in the process of just issuing proceedings.

MeMe118 - that level of incompetence is incredible, but, unfortunately, not suprising.

Just interested - what sort of recompense are you after via the courts and how are you justifying that?

I have the same situation. I thought it was settled a couple of years ago when someone finally came out , looked at my meter and said  "oh, it's not your meter." I'd been telling them that for 4 years! Now I've just received both a bill for 4 grand and then a letter opening an account. I'm with Octopus and BG haven't taken my account over, it's all a fiction.

Hope you continue to update as I'd be interested to hear what happens.

Due to the incompetence of British Gas they have caused a significant psychological injury to my partner.

My partner is Autistic and actually ended up in hospital under section 2 as a result of the harassment and the debt collectors, also lost significant weight (5 stone to be exact)

My energy accounts are all balanced at £0.00 because my partner will have it no other way.

My sincere sympathy that that happened, and BG deserve to pay. But, you only answer the "why" part of the question, not the "what" part. You need to be clear what you're asking for, even if you choose not to declare it here.
