  • if its like food poisoning symptoms, go for boiled water (obv, let it cool a little first) even if its only small sips at a time - ensures any bacteria is completely killed off. if the symptoms are like food poisioning then it might be gastric flu, and i could only manage boiled water when I had that. adding food/sugars/etc to your stomach apparently gives the bug something to feed off (v. roughly speaking), whereas the boiled water helps flush it out of your system.

  • Flat full sugar cola - the caffine / sugar mix helps - NOT the diet version!
  • You may need to not drink any liquid at all for a while, just put water in your mouth to moisten it.
  • Flat lemonade works well too.

Hope you all soon feel better. x

flat coke and a tiny pinch of salt to replace the salts lost from vomiting, or dioralyte from the chemists - just let them sip it not gulp it down

In A&E for diarrhoea and vomiting in children we advise any clear non-fizzy fluid that the child likes - water with squash/barley water etc... otherwise you can buy Diarolyte from the chemists.

The stuff about boiled water isn't true as most cases of D&V are caused by viruses that are more hardy to heat.

thanks to all posters all much better today at least the sickness has stopped, stomach cramps eased.we never had diarrhoea, thank god,
the flat coke seemed to do the trick, here south midlands, the whole area seems to be suffering including the local hospital.

You will be glad to be on the mend. It's a horrible time of year to get a sickness bug. If everyone gets fed up with coke, flat ginger ale can be a bit of a change!

My poor OH is on holiday in switzerland, skiing or rather he seems to be spending all his time in the loo with the trots. I have advised him to get immodium (doubt he'll bother, he'll just suffer and make everyone's life hell) as well as eating plain food like toast, egg and drinking water and dilute fruit juice. Also reminded him today that he has an E111 form so he can get medical treatment whilst there.

There seems to be a lot of the sickness/diarrhoea bugs going round lately - some hospitals are calling it the winter vomiting virus and I know that some wards at my local hospital have been shut because of it.

Hope you all get better soon.

If you have been sick and still are being sick, possibly with diarrhoea you will have lost a lot of fluid so even if you take sips is better than nothing but do try. The very old and young can end up in hospital with this kind of bug because of dehydration.

    Water
, ice chips, flat coke, or those sports water drinks replenish the salts lost as well.
